What is Twelve Men's Morris?
Twelve Men's Morris is a classic two-player logic and strategy board game in the Morris family. Each player has 12 pieces, the board has 24 points, and the goal is to make mills, capture opposing pieces and leave the other player with fewer than three pieces or no legal move.
The game feels close to Nine Men's Morris, but the extra pieces and diagonal corner lines create a denser board. More points can be contested at once, so blocking, timing and double threats matter from the first few turns.

How to play Twelve Men's Morris online
Choose Vs AI to play the computer, or choose 2 players for a same-screen match. During the placing phase, click any empty point. During the moving phase, click one of your pieces and then a highlighted connected destination.
If a move creates a mill, the board enters capture mode. Choose an opponent piece to remove. Pieces inside mills are protected unless every opposing piece is already in a mill. The message above the board tells you whether to place, move, fly or capture.

- Watch the diagonal lines because they create extra mills.
- A full board after placement is treated as a draw.
Twelve Men's Morris rules
The rules are simple, but the position changes quickly. First, players place all 24 pieces one at a time. Every completed mill gives a capture. Then pieces move from point to connected point, and new mills continue to capture pieces.
You win by reducing your opponent to two pieces, because they can no longer form a mill, or by blocking every legal move. If the board fills completely during placement, neither player can slide, so the game is drawn.
- A mill must use three connected points on a marked horizontal, vertical or diagonal line.
- You may not remove a protected mill piece if another opponent piece is available.
- A player with three pieces left may fly to any empty point.
- Blocked movement after placement loses unless the board was already full.
- Captured pieces do not return to play.

Good Twelve Men's Morris strategy is about flexible pressure. Because every player places 12 pieces, the board can become crowded before movement begins. Try to build positions that threaten mills in more than one direction instead of racing toward one obvious capture.
The diagonal corner lines are powerful because they connect the outer, middle and inner squares. A corner chain can create a mill, block an opponent's route and support a future flying phase all at once.
- Claim points that belong to several possible mills.
- Block open two-in-a-row threats before they become captures.
- Keep at least one escape route for important pieces.
- Use diagonal threats to stretch your opponent's defence.
- Do not trade captures if it leaves you with trapped pieces.
AI difficulty levels and 2 player mode
Easy AI chooses legal moves with a light preference for mills and captures, which makes it useful for learning the rules. Medium AI scores material, mills, future threats and mobility before it moves.
Hard AI searches likely replies and values positions that make several threats at once. You can also switch to 2 player mode for a local game on the same screen, which is often the best way to learn the tactics together.
